Re: (Finally Complete) Telefang English Translation

Discuss anything related to hacking ROMs of the Telefang games here.

The thing is that Denjuu's names (and anything in blocks of fixed character lengths) are difficult to edit. With dialogue, you can have them of variable length, and there is a pointer telling the address of the first letter, and there is a reserved character (E1+xx) telling the game to end the dialogue.

Denjuu's names are different. They have fixed character lengths, and they do not have pointers pointing to each name. Instead, somewhere in the ROM, it just points to the very first Denjuu, and there's somewhere in the game that allocates 8 characters (though I have no idea where this is). Not to mention that even if you find this, there's still the issue of displaying the name on the screen, as almost all screens are designed for eight characters (any more, and it may overflow to places where it shouldn't be).

Anyways, I did the shop text (at least what was translated; a lot of lines were the same so I just copied and pasted them). I did it for all 12 shops! Download the patch below!

If you spot any problems, let me know, though I haven't found any.

EDIT: Fixed link because I screwed up something else with the first one (I added an extra character which threw off everything, and messed up one of the pointers).

XD Argh.... I guess I'll go back to the translation topic now, then... x_x

Mmm though, if you just wanted the name origins and pronunciation, there's nothing stopping you from asking.... *shrug* I said I'd support the idea, I just really don't want to be the one doing the naming... :/

I'll check out the patch~ (The denjuu names are found at 001D4000, by the way.) XD

When I said that there's something in the game that makes it 8 characters, I meant there's some code somewhere in the game that tells the game to use 8 characters for Denjuu. THAT'S what the problem is. Oh and by the way, I'm in the middle of working on the curry stuff, so expect another patch soon.

Yes I know. That is what I'm looking for. And failing badly.

I was wondering what that was.

Haha. So you saw that broken patch before I removed it? Anyway, I have a new one. I did most of the dialogue in Toronko Water Station, up to part of the way when you wake up Nejiro. Took me a really long time to do.

Here's the patch (V17):

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bxnmny2mnmj

Some notes:

- Due to Game Boy limitations of pointers, I can only point within a cluster of $4000 bytes. In the case of the mart/intro/Toronko Water Station text, this is within $120000-123FFF. This means that you only have so much space to fit in here. I had some serious space issues until I realized that a LOT of shop text is stored multiple times. So made this more efficient by combining all the text that appears multiple times into once, then pointed to the same location multiple times (for each shop). You'll see from $120000-1200D1 (the mart text pointers) that there is a pattern now with the pointers: notice that a lot of pointers are used multiple times here. This saved about $A00 (2,560) bytes of space, which is about 1/6 of the ROM bank. This was huge, and without doing this, I would not have had enough room to store everything else in this ROM bank.

- As a result, I constantly changed pointers around for mart text, so it's possible that I screwed up in some way. I tested about half the marts, though, and I didn't find anything wrong.

- I didn't do anything outside the cave yet.

- Since all of this text shows up a lot in marts, then translating this could be nice (I'm guessing this is mod/experimental text):

ここでは デンジュウを
『かいぞうシンカ』させることが
できます

『かいぞうしよう』を
みせてください。

この『かいぞうしよう』では
あなたのつれているデンジュウを
シンカさせることができません。

ここでは デンジュウを
『じっけんシンカ』させることが
できます

『じっけんしよう』を
みせてください。

この『じっけんしよう』では
あなたのつれているデンジュウを
シンカさせることができません。

- I hope I don't run into space issues in the future with other ROM banks.

- Pokémon Diamond/Jade did not save space by using each text from shops once -- this results in heavily condensed text for the rest of the bank.

Here's the rest of the shop text done... (Link)

I was worried that we would run out of space, especially since the other parts are pure text... Pretty much everything is going to be longer than the original.... >_< Hm.

I'll have a look at it in a second. I got a new patch up! All the text for the Kakuza party is done. That includes most everything in Toronko Village Water Station that involves major characters, and the locked doors. Check it out! And the part right after beating Tabasco is done too!

So far it's great!

... but why is Kakuza party member still called "Isolate"? D:

Good question. I'll leave that to somebody else, though.
