Well, I finally have the NPC and cutscene text for Toronko village done~ XD
Link
That should be pretty much everything before you set foot in Kurinon, but there are still some people who's text was elsewhere in the rom that I haven't found yet. ): Namely, the guy standing behind the shop who explains D-shot functions (his name is Umekichi), and the guy in the house who explains type advantages, I think...

I didn't put the line breaks in the translation, but for when you put it in the patch, you can probably make each new sentence a new line...? *nod* And if anything sounds weird, do say....XD

That's awesome! I'll get to work on it when I have the chance. I should be done with everything you translated in the next few days (using pointers makes it really tedious).

I just read all of that. Your translation sounds very professional.

I got a few lines done so far. But I want to ask a few things:

- Is it really "Mr. Nerikara" and not "Nerikara"? I thought the "Mr." thing was a translation error, because I see it a LOT in the bootleg. I think I've also seen it in the bootleg Pokémon Crystal too, if I remember correctly...

- What is "puni" (appearently Musa says this)? Is it short for Punica? If so, that doesn't make any sense (and it should be capitalized).

It depends on who says it, the people in his party are generally more respectful when talking about him, so they would use Mr. when other people wouldn't. Or something. ;_; Mostly it's a translation of -san, which is pretty much the japanese equivalent, and bootlegs don't bother using judgement and just translate Mr. for every single one... XD

Puni is what all of the Punica's say at the end of their sentences, because they're Punica's and they can't help it, I assume. XD I don't think that Musa ever says it, or rather, if it has "puni" in it then you can tell it's said by a Punica... *nod* I don't really think it needs to be capitalized, since a lot of Denjuu have similar words in their attack/arrive phrases....*nod*

Oh, that makes sense. I guess the "Puni" thing is similar to Pokémon? Sort of? And the Mr. thing is interesting. Does anybody ever refer to Shigeki as Mr. Shigeki?

Oh, and I noticed that the order that the shop text is stored in is the same order as it is in the "shop map." You see, the shops (and the houses) are actually one 8x8 map. Of course, you can't look at the map, but you can tell where you are on the map by looking at memory address 0xC906. So far, 00 is the Toronko Village shop (which is in the top-left corner), 01 is one of the shops in Tripa Village (the next one to the right), and so on. This makes it easy for me to test the text that I edit...

More similar to the Prinnies in Disgaea dood.

Though here is an early version of the "crying names" (8-char names) for the patch:
001 Sunonasu
012 Tricolor
019 Freesia
027 Hortnsia
029 Rhodanth
036 Firekoko
040 Cryarm
041 Sheltera
043 Baltamus
054 Hliopsis
055 Cotinus
059 Chamraid
060 Cryride
061 Wormiala
063 Bultamus
069 ---
071 Hideight
086 ---
087 ---
088 ---
090 ---
091 ---
106 Gauthier (the name of the guy they named the genus after)
112 Tricearm
113 Crysnipe
116 Sailiger
117 Amedurus
118 Octogun
119 Voidboar
120 Pineedle
121 Gilgerth
123 Cryburn
124 Funmech
125 ---
129 Mumiboar
134 Tulbaghi
135 Kiringku
136 Anglance
140 Quetzal (Kicked king off the end and named him after Quetzalcoatl which is most likely his name origin. Deity trumps king anyway.)
141 ---
142 Punkhoru
143 ---
151 Angpower
156 Gigaerth
158 Cryarmor
161 Angorgo
163 Liriking
165 ---
167 Ornith

As you can see, a fair number of them need work. Especially since the translation topic hasn't been updated in a while and Kimbles' name list fails to include name origins. I'm quite proud of Quetzal and Gauthier though.

Also if we manage to add these, I would suggest writing the name as (for example) "Crypto" instead of "CRYPTO". We can finally kill off that silly full uppercase requirement with Denjuu names.

XD Man...
Those names are horrible. :/ It's not your fault, you are trying to make them do something they can not do. It is a valiant effort but it pains me to even look at them.

It's enough to dissuade me from using the patch though. Which is a shame since Kimbles' translations are good. :/

Different-width letters are a hundred times better than this....XD

Sorry to sound mean, I don't want to, but this has been eating at me for a while...

As I said, a large portion of those names need work (a.k.a. Not finished). I feel the same way that you do about most of these names, but I also know that most of them can be improved. I could do something much better with a full list of name origins and a pronunciation guide, and maybe some help from you or Kimbles. Unfortunately I have an horribly outdated name origins list, no pronunciation guide whatsoever, and both of you want nothing to do with it. So cut me some slack here.

The names are, at best, temporary. They will improve, and later on they will be replaced with full length names if, or when, we get someone to make the names use a 12 character limit, a 2088 byte long unused section of the rom, and a 5x8 (width x height) font. A font that I won't be able to work on, nor anyone else, until I free up the space used by doubled up characters.

Sorry for sounding grumpy, but this is like someone criticising a messy wood sawing job when the only tool you were given for the job was a chisel.

I think I might create and insert a 12-char name list into an unused section of the rom in order to see if it affects anything in the game.

Also I wonder if I can find anything pointing at the name list and redirect it. Hmm...
