This was a while ago that it happened, so I'll try to remember what happened...
Well, all that really happened was that when my Punica evolved into Puneedle, it kept its name. It should read プニードル (Puneedle), but my Puneedle's name is still プニカ (Punica). Is this a glitch? I may vaguely remember me trying to give it a nickname, but then just putting back in the Katakana for Punica when I got Punica's number, but I don't remember if I did that or not.
My Puneedle in TF1 Speed is still named "Punica"?

Denjuu always keep their previous name when they evolve, even if you don't nickname them. So the only way to have a Puneedle named "Puneedle" is to either name it that while it's still a Punica, or recruit an already-evolved Puneedle.
If I remember correctly, the translation patch handles nicknames differently if it detects that they haven't changed from the Denjuu's species name, so in the case of the patch only I believe "Punica" would evolve into the appropriately-renamed "Puneedle". If you'd named it something else, eg "Buddy", it would still be named "Buddy" when it evolved.
